Witches Brew, a Pagan business |
|
In Auburn, NY, there is a cafe called Witches Brew, named after a brand of coffee that they serve there. To learn a bit more about this business and some of the ideas behind it, I am interviewing one of the co-owners, Nancy Health. Christopher: I would imagine every Pagan has toyed with the idea of having a business, yet only a small number of even ordinary businesses survive. I guess my first question is how Pagan friendly is Auburn and how did that affect how you panned your business? Nancy: Auburn is for the most part a very conservative city. I had decided to try opening this cafe and gift shop with a Pagan theme because it was never done in this area. I knew there was a Pagan community, which I felt needed a place to share beliefs, ideas and itself with the area. Christopher: Have you found that your beliefs affect how you operate your business? Nancy: Yes, I was raised with the belief to accept all, to always learn from one another and to respect all life and the Mother. That all belief systems are paths to same end result. So I try to apply this to the shop each day. I have learned so much from other people who come in. Sometimes it is in their way of belief or just general information of different topics. It is amazing just as they are. Christopher: Is Witches Brew today different from your original concept? Nancy: Not really, as with all businesses, you have to see what is working and what is not. we have brought about a cafe and shop where people tell me they feel like they are home. The customers feel they have found a relaxing atomosphere where one can eat healthier, purchase a book, herb, stone or an item made by local artisans. Christopher: What kind of mix of people do you see in your business? Nancy: People from all walks of life come to the shop. There is a sign on the door that states it is an oppression free zone, park your bigotry at the curb. All are welcome and come in. The place is very diversified in every aspect. Christopher: As you cater to a variety of people, how have you worked to make them all feel comfortable? Nancy: One must listen. Not every wish can be granted, but to let people know you care about them, who they are and help them on their unique and individual paths makes one feel comfortable. Christopher: What are you plans for the future? Anything new that you have not tried yet? Nancy: We would like to grow in the next year to year and a half. Add more retail, so Pagans and others in the area can have a local business to shop at. Possibly add in a teaching center, that would incorporate healing from physical to metaphysical, teaching from cooking to crafting and learning of the different paths of all. Christopher: Any advice for other Pagans considering going into business? Nancy: Be patient, it takes a lot of that. Realise that your goals at first might be slow to materialize. Starting a business for the first few years is difficult, but it will build if you are flexible and have stamina. Christopher: Anything you would like potential customers to know about Witches Brew? Nancy: Welcome Home and come in and sit for a spell. |
